Safe Chemical Management

The chemicals used in the print industry can be potentially harmful to both people and the environment. Exposure to chemicals that are not properly managed can cause serious health problems. They can also negatively impact biodiversity, as they pollute the air, water, and soil, impacting the plants and animals that rely on these resources. This makes it very important that you minimise the risks of using these chemicals on people and the environment.

Precautions should be taken to ensure that employees are not harmed by hazardous substances or chemicals. This includes implementing policies for treating any hazardous or toxic chemicals in a responsible way and being aware of all chemical ingredients intentionally added to product, as well as any residuals of high concern present in those products. Providing information, instruction, and training on how to properly handle and dispose of these chemicals can also help reduce their impact.

Toxic chemicals used in the printing process can be found in inks, solvents, and adhesives such as glue. To minimise the negative impact of printing on human health and the environment, it is important to use safer, more eco-friendly chemicals and processes whenever possible. This includes proper handling and storage of chemicals, and effective ventilation and air filtration systems.

Water-based inks can be used as an alternative to conventional inks. Conventional inks are typically solvent-based, and may contain VOCs which can be very damaging to the environment and human health.

Water-based inks do not contain as many toxins and are much less harmful to the environment. These do not emit harmful fumes and are easier to clean up. While they may not be suitable for all printing applications, they are a good option to reduce the amount of toxins used in the printing process.
